PRODUCT QUESTIONS
With its low-chemical content, Naturtint is kinder to your hair and skin over traditional coloring products. Its plant-enriched formula helps maximize shine and color for up to 5 weeks. And it provides excellent gray coverage, too!
When you choose Naturtint, you’re getting a product that’s free from ammonia, parabens, silicones, paraffin, mineral oils, heavy metals, artificial fragrances, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), formaldehyde derivatives, and more!
Naturtint is not only free from ammonia and resorcinol free but is also enriched with natural and organic plant and seed oils and extracts, to gently care for your hair and scalp so with the correct use, Naturtint is very gentle on the hair. Many customers who have been colouring their hair for some time comment on the improvement of their hair condition after trying Naturtint for the first time.
Although it is hard to lighten very dark shades, it is possible to lighten most natural colours by up to 2 shades. For example, if your natural colour is 3N it would be possible to lighten to a 5N. Colour can’t lift colour however, so if your hair has been coloured previously you will have to gradually lighten the hair with each root application.
One kit typically contains enough product to color shoulder-length hair. If your hair is longer than that, you may want to buy two or more kits.
Your hair is unique to you. Everyone will have their own individual results depending on starting color, hair quality, and/or texture, and we can’t guarantee it will look exactly like the image on the box. Since your hair and body chemistry are continually changing, the only way to predict your final color precisely is to do a strand test right before coloring.
Yes! Naturtint is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Phergal, the manufacturer, does not test products on animals.
No, you must be at least 16 years old to use it.
Yes, but you should wait 14 days before applying the colourant and ensure your hair has been shampooed at least once. Permed, relaxed or chemically straightened hair is more porous and may require a shorter development time. As bleach removes your natural pigment you may need to put back some warm tones during the colouring treatment. A colour strand test will help you identify the colour and development time required for your hair.
TREATMENT QUESTIONS
Before each use, we strongly recommend doing both tests (instructions are found on the packaging insert). The colour strand test will help you predict the final colour you can expect after the treatment. This test is especially helpful if you’re a new Naturtint customer or if you are significantly changing your colour.
Any cosmetic can trigger an allergic reaction, even if you’ve used it frequently before. The sensitivity test can help you determine if you’re sensitive to Naturtint. Like other permanent dyes, Naturtint contains ingredients that could cause allergic reactions for certain individuals. Take a preliminary sensitivity test 48 hours before treatment to decide if it’s right for you.
If you do have an allergic reaction to the sensitivity test, do not use the product. Consult a medical professional about your allergy symptoms.
HOW TO PERFORM A SKIN SENSITIVITY TEST – Naturtint Permanent Hair Colours and Root Retouch Creme Hair Colours
- Remove any earrings. Cleanse a small area (1-2cm) of skin behind your ear and on your inner elbow and dry gently.
- Put on the gloves provided and carefully unscrew the caps from the Colourant and Colour Developer bottles.
- In a plastic bowl, using plastic utensils, mix a small amount (in equal measures) of the Colourant and Colour Developer until totally blended. Do not use metal or metal utensils. Reseal both bottles immediately to preserve the contents ready for full application 48 hours later.
- Using a cotton bud, apply the mixture to the cleansed area behind your ear and on your inner elbow and allow it to dry.
- Then apply 2 more layers, each time allowing the areas to dry in-between.
- Leave the test mixture on the skin for at least 48 hours without washing, covering or touching the test area.
- If you experience any signs of reaction, such as swelling, redness, blistering, rash or itching, in or around the test area, you are sensitive to one or more of the ingredients within the formula – rinse immediately and do not use this product on your hair.
HOW TO PERFORM A COLOUR STRAND TEST – Naturtint Permanent Hair Colours and Naturtint Root Retouch Creme Hair Colours
1. Use the same mixture you prepared for your skin sensitivity test.
2. Cut a small section of your hair from the root (approximately 3cm wide) and, wearing the gloves provided, completely cover with the mixture.
TIP: secure the strands of hair at one end with some sticky tape.
3. a) If using a Naturtint Permanent Hair Colour, rinse the hair clean after 20-30 minutes. In the case of stubborn grey, or to achieve a more intense colour, leave the mixture for a further 5-10 minutes.
3. b) If using a Naturtint Root Retouch Creme Hair Colour, rinse the hair clean after 10 minutes. In the case of stubborn grey, or to achieve a more intense colour, leave the mixture for a further 5-10 minutes.
4. Gently dry the section of hair to reveal your colour result, remembering to take a note of your hairs specific development time.
Yes, by mixing colours you can create an endless palette of shades! Many customers mix colours to create their own unique shade – please see the Colour Application page for advice on what works best.
Apply Naturtint over dry unwashed hair, free from any styling products (which can interfere with the way your hair absorbs the colour). We recommend washing your hair and waiting 24–48 hours before applying the colour to allow your hair’s PH and natural oils to normalise.
Since Naturtint is not designed for highlights and lowlights, we cannot guarantee the final result. Keep in mind that Naturtint can only lighten effectively for up to two shades.
Consult your professional hairdresser for advice with highlights/lowlights.
NOTE: Do not use any metal (including highlighting foils) with your Naturtint! It can cause discoloration.
After 60 minutes, the color process is fully finished. Exposing your hair and scalp to the coloring treatment longer won’t add more color. If you have stubborn grays, you may leave it on just 5 minutes beyond the recommended 40 minutes.
Naturtint gives you everything you need for the color treatment in one kit. To prevent reactions, we do not recommend mixing it with another brand’s product.
This is not a common occurrence but in fine or dry skin it may occur. To avoid this a small amount of Vaseline can be applied on the forehead. Once the coloring process is finished remove the Vaseline. If the hair is quite thin and stains appear on the scalp, before rinsing the coloring with water, wet the fingertips with water and massage the areas prone to stains together with the dye.
Since Naturtint is a permanent colouring product, make sure your treatment area can be easily covered and cleaned. Protect surfaces by covering them with a drop cloth or old sheet. Keep a damp cloth nearby to wipe up any drips. If some of the color gets onto a hard floor surface (tile, quartz, marble, ceramic, etc.), you can use a slightly abrasive product with bleach to assist in clean up.
If your skin is prone to staining, place a little bit of Vaseline around your hairline before treating. Afterward, wipe it off with a damp cloth or wash with soap and water.
NOTE: Permanent color will stain soft surfaces like carpets, cloth, or wood! Use extra caution to apply your color treatment in a safe and appropriately protected area.
POST-TREATMENT QUESTIONS
To avoid over processing the hair, we recommend you colour your hair no more frequently than every 6-8 weeks with the Naturtint Permanent Hair Colours, which is usually when the root regrowth is visible and requires colouring. If you find your colour is fading during this time, make sure you are using hair care products for coloured hair (ideally the Naturtint Aftercare & Styling range!) and consider how you are applying the colour – are there any styling products on the hair that may be causing a barrier to the colour? Are you doing a full head colour with every application? If so, you are likely to be over processing the hair, leaving it weak and porous which will cause colour to quickly fade.
Naturtint is a permanent hair colour product. How long it lasts will depend on your hair’s condition and how you care for it.
Typically, you might see some fading after about 3–5 weeks. But other factors can cause your hair to fade sooner. Those with dry or porous hair might notice color fading faster. If you used a red colour, it might fade sooner than neutral colours.
To delay colour fading, try these tips:
- Keep your hair well-conditioned. Deep conditioning treatments improve your hair’s condition.
- Wash with a color-safe, PH-balanced shampoo and conditioner.
- Rinse with lukewarm water. (Hot water opens hair cuticles, allowing colour to release easier).
Wash your hair with a PH-balanced shampoo 24–48 hours before and after coloring.
Yes, provided that the colouring and oxygen are not mixed.
Unfortunately, chlorine will affect your color. That’s why we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before swimming in a chlorinated pool. Here are a few other tips you can try:
- Rinse your hair in the shower before and after swimming.
- Deep condition your hair.
- Wear a swimming cap.
TIPS FOR A PERFECT COLOUR
- In a small plastic container, evenly mix a small amount of colouring with the same amount of colour activator. Mix both components together until they form a gel.
- Cut a strand of hair of about 3 cm and apply the mixture.
- Rinse the strand after 20 minutes. If your hair is very coarse, gray or has been previously colored, wait another 10 minutes.
- Note the exposure time. This will be the exposure time which you should use for the coloring process.
If you are going to use a fashion tone, like reds, coppers, etc. and you have a high percentage of grey, you should mix the fashion tone with a Natural tone (N) of the same clarity. The proportion to use will be the same as your proportion of grey hair and it may reach half of each tone in the case of having 100% grey hair. For difficult to cover grey hair, you can alter the mixing ratio between the Activator Colour lotion and the colouring, discarding 25% of the Activator Colour before adding all the colouring cream. With this mixing ratio proceed as usual but avoid applying the mixture on the tips until the last 5 minutes.
If you use a natural (N) or golden (G) tone, mix it with reference 8A. For copper and mahogany tones, prepare the mixture with the reference of the same level as the natural tone.
Yes. Bearing in mind that the final ratio between colour activator and colouring should be 50% -50%.
